POW: The Power of Women

Puatea Ellis exemplifies the spirit of living joyfully, learning eagerly, leading humbly, and serving compassionately. Her commitment to education and personal growth has not only propelled her career but also inspired many in her community to pursue their own paths of learning and development. Puatea’s ability to lead with grace and integrity, while continuously seeking knowledge, sets her apart as a role model. Her service-oriented mindset drives her to create opportunities for others, making significant contributions to societal progress and well-being.

Hailing from Tahiti, an island rich in culture and natural beauty, Puatea’s connection to her roots runs deep. Her life's work is influenced by her commitment to giving back to her island community. Whether through initiatives focused on education, preserving cultural heritage, or improving community well-being, Puatea’s impact has been felt far and wide. From organizing events that celebrate Tahitian culture to spearheading youth programs, she has made it her mission to ensure the island's traditions are passed down to future generations.

Apex Peak Performance Coach, Ricardo Urbina, had the opportunity to experience a powerful demonstration of Puatea’s leadership in action during the Tahiti to Moorea downwind foil competition this past July—a thrilling, intense race across the open ocean. This race, which draws elite athletes from around the world, challenges participants with strong winds, rough seas, and the mental resilience needed to navigate the unpredictable waters between the two islands. The demands of the race require both peak physical and mental performance, but the safety of the participants is equally crucial.

Puatea, a world-class athlete herself, led the water safety team, ensuring that each participant could push their limits safely. Ricardo had the honor of joining Puatea’s team during this event, and it was an experience that showcased the full breadth of her leadership.

The safety team’s job was to maintain constant vigilance over the athletes, ready to respond at a moment’s notice if any needed assistance. Puatea ensured that each team member was empowered to perform their role with precision. Her leadership was not about giving orders; it was about creating an environment where every person, whether athlete or team member, could operate at their highest potential.

Through this event, Puatea illustrated the essence of peak performance—not just in physical endurance, but in mental clarity, teamwork, and trust. She led by example, demonstrating that true leadership is about serving others while maintaining an unwavering commitment to excellence.

In the same way that Puatea’s athletic achievements have opened doors for women in male-dominated sports, her leadership in water safety during the Tahiti to Moorea competition set a new standard for how we view women in roles of responsibility and influence. She blended her passion for water sports with her deep sense of service, ensuring that everyone involved, from the athletes to the safety team, could perform at their best.

Additionally, Ricardo had the privilege of serving as Puatea’s freedive instructor and apnea coach during his recent visit to Tahiti, where they worked together to refine breath control and underwater techniques, further enhancing her ability to excel in challenging conditions. This collaboration reflected Puatea’s continuous drive to learn and improve, even as she led others with expertise.

Puatea’s dedication to water safety, lifelong learning and community service has influenced and inspired people worldwide. As a member of the Olympic Surf safety team, she played a critical role in ensuring the safety of the world's top surfers during one of the sport’s most prestigious competitions. Her advocacy for water safety has taken her from Tahiti to Hawaii, California, and France, where she has continued to promote safety measures, train lifeguards, and introduce water safety education to schools. Through her tireless work, Puatea saves lives while also empowering others to enjoy water activities with confidence.

Puatea Ellis’s life is a testament to the power of women who lead with integrity, pursue personal growth, and serve others with compassion. Her achievements in sports, her dedication to her community, and her unwavering commitment to education and safety are an inspiration to young women everywhere. Puatea shows us that leading with strength and heart can have a profound impact on the world around us, creating opportunities and paving the way for future generations.

The graciousness and warmth with which Puatea and her family welcomed us reflects the same compassion and generosity that defines Puatea’s leadership. It was a memorable experience that further deepened the bond and underscored Puatea’s character, not just as a leader but as a person whose kindness radiates in all aspects of her life.
